Mestia is a year-round resort. In contrast to different regions of Georgia in Mestia there is always a season and there are a lot of tourists. Mestia is a highland region in Svaneti (part of Georgia), with its traditions and culture, cuisine, which is also an integral part of Georgia. In Mestia people go to relax, enjoy the most beautiful views, look at the ancient fortifications, enjoy Georgian and Svan cuisine, walk along mountain trails and conquer a couple of peaks.
Mestia is a high-mountainous center, most often getting to Mestia tourists go to Ushguli or to a ski resort nearby and sometimes right from here they start on foot hiking.
There are several main ways to get to Mestia:
here is a small airport, but quite nice and modern in Mestia. Having been there I cannot say that it's some kind of chicken coop. Very nice modern building. Many could learn how to build such airports, even though the passenger traffic here is quite small, it cannot be compared even with Boryspil or Moscow. At the same time a small modern building looks good even against the backdrop of ancient buildings and a mountain landscape.
As we have already mentioned, small planes from Kutaisi and Tbilisi arrive here. As far as we know, from Tbilisi (near Natakhtari airport), flights are performed by a private company, but flights from Kutaisi are flights of the Georgian government air company.
Having visited Mestia we felt that here something like Ukrainian Bukovel, someone found the echoes of Austria. Why is that? We thought so because of the houses that look fabulous with a foundation of natural stone. It should be very beautiful in the New Year and Christmas holidays.
The whole city of Mestia is represented by many hotels, cafes and guest houses, in Mestia there are even two petrol stations. Do not be surprised that we even wrote. Mestia is really far away and fuel here is more expensive than down in the plain. Prices for food and housing will also be higher, all because of transportation services.
Mestia it's still a transit destination. Further, tourists go to Ushguli or go to the Tetnuldi ski resort. Someone stops here then sits on a local transfer and goes to Ushguli, someone goes to Ushguli by a campaign for 2 days with an overnight stay in tents right in the mountains. Some tourists conquer mountain peaks living in the vicinity of Mestia or in the town itself. In any case, be vigilant, the mountains do not forgive mistakes. You should not go to the mountains on your own and do not forget to warn local people about your campaign. Warn, in any case you will be searched much faster in any emergency situation.
We recommend and so do most of the tourists. In Mestia you should rent a car with a driver on the spot, or order a bus if you want to go to Ushguli. Local residents specifically purchased cars for these places. They use Mitsubishi Delica on a high platform to travel to these areas, we would not recommend another car to you. The transfer fee to Ushguli and back will be from 100 GEL for a car with a driver and fuel.
If you want to book a car rental with a driver in Mestia or go to Ushguli, contact our reservation department, we will help you with your local guide and car for your purposes, recommend the best destinations, places to stay and everything else.
To order a transfer or rent a car:
If you are looking for a car rental without a driver in Mestia, then this service is not developed here, but we will provide you with these services without any problems. A small negative is that we deliver the car from Batumi or another city, which means that we have substantial expenses for the delivery and business trip of the employee that will fall on you. But if money is not a problem, we are ready to calculate your order for delivery of the car and issue it in Mestia. Please note that delivery or return of the car in this region will cost from 400 lari (150 dollars) or more. The possibility of organizing such a delivery is specified in our booking department (+995) 514-577-555 (+995) 514-896-896 or firstname.lastname@example.org
If you took a car in our company and rented a car as a rental without a driver, we strictly forbid driving by car further Ipari, which is 5 km further Mestia towards Ushguli. Please pay attention to this!
We specifically made a test drive to these regions in November 2017 at the urging of our customers. The road is only up to Ipari then about 13-15 km off-road where the running car is terribly broken and there is also the possibility of sliding into the cliff or the rocks and the destruction of the car and people.
